Greetings everyone! I am very proud to announce the release of:
The Lost Highway Chronicles Episode I A Sci-Fi Thriller By John P. McCann
What is it? This is my version of an old-time radio program that I created using the WavePad Audio Editing Software; it's on CD and approximately 42 minutes long. There is a bonus, I created an “adventure book” as well. It is about the size of a comic book and has 24 pages containing 12 really cool original drawings. It is a summarized text of the audio CD.
I’ve listened to dozens of programs from the Golden Age of Radio (1930’s-1950’s), including episodes from “Escape,” “Inner Sanctum,” “Lights Out," etc. As awesome as some of them are, I hope that you will find my story even better. I worked on this project for over a year and literally have hundreds of hours into it. Putting this together has been a long road, but I enjoyed the challenge and loved every minute of the creation process. The audio was recorded entirely in "wav." files, and will rattle your windows if you have a good stereo system!
The story directly relates to the theme of my basement arcade, and is a creation from my own mind. I love sci-fi and anything having to do with UFO’s, time travel, the thrill of the chase, and beating the odds to survive. This story reflects just that.
“The Lost Highway Chronicles Episode I” is a symphony of sounds that is a real treat for any listener. The adventure book mimics a comic book in size, has awesome artwork, prepares you for the audio CD, and gives you something to look at and hang on to. This website has tons of trivia, easter eggs, links, and other information. Please check out the artwork and audio samples!
When you listen to my story, you WILL get goosebumps, you’ll fear the UFO’s, and you’ll be cheering on the pilots as they fight for survival. I guarantee you will be entertained!
I challenge you as a listener to envision how the UFO looks through Connor's eyes as he plans his escape on foot after bailing out of the B-29. Or how the attack robots look to Reed as he and Connor make their escape across the desert on the motorbike. I also challenge you to solve all the easter egg and trivia questions on your own, without peeking at the answers first!
I’ve done my best to keep costs down so everyone can buy a copy and not break the bank. I know that any sci-fi fan will listen to it again and again and enjoy it every time. There is enough content, artwork, and sounds to keep any reader/listener coming back for more. Thank you for stopping by and enjoy!
Introduction
I’ve always been intrigued by old-time radio shows. Growing up a generation later, I missed the Golden Age of Radio. I often wonder what it would’ve been like to gather around a Philco radio with my family on a Saturday night and listen to an episode of "Escape," keeping us on the edge of our seats. This is my version of an old-time radio show, but with a twist; you get the adventure book as well.
“The Lost Highway Chronicles” was born out of my determination to expand on the theme of my home arcade. I have been collecting classic arcade games like Space Invaders, Asteroids, and Missile Command since February of 1998. Growing up during the “Golden Age” of arcades (1978-1986) inspired me to one day build an arcade of my own.
My basement arcade was completed in August of 2001, but after the floor suffered water damage in August of 2007, the entire game room was restored and updated. After much contemplation, I finalized the theme of my game room to be “The Lost Highway Arcade.” Ideas began to flow like a river. The search was on for items with which to decorate my game room in order to bring it all to life.
My theory is that anything can happen on The Lost Highway, so justifying any number of strange additions and décor was easy. There are UFO’s, downed pilots (mannequins in military apparel), danger signs, and even real telephone/utility poles, complete with authentic insulators and wires.
The custom mural that I co-designed with my friend Jeff Hardtke adds to the visual effects and gives us all something extra to talk about. Additions to the mural are inevitable, and the possibilities are endless. (Please see links page for pictures of my home arcade)
I wanted my game room to have more life than just props and signs; this is where the audio CD and adventure book come in. Creating these has been challenging, exciting, and very rewarding, as I have come full circle with the evolution of my creation.
I hope you enjoy listening to “The Lost Highway Chronicles” audio CD and paging through the adventure book. So turn the lights down, grab some popcorn and your favorite drink, and let me take you for a ride on “The Lost Highway!!”
Preface
Episode I of “The Lost Highway Chronicles” is the story of two WWII bomber pilots and their battle for survival. Colonel Blake Connor and Lieutenant Preston Reed begin their journey in 1945 on a bombing raid to Japan. Enroute to the target, they encounter strange lights and lose the ability to maneuver the aircraft. Separated from the rest of the squadron, they are ultimately pulled into a massive vortex, which is in fact a time warp!
They emerge from the time warp over desert terrain, confused and still without any control of the aircraft. Amazingly, Connor is able to establish radio contact with a United States Army missile command, proclaiming they are lost and low on fuel. They don’t realize it’s the year 1984. Within minutes, a hostile UFO appears and begins a relentless attack on the B-29! In a desperate attempt to fight back, LT Reed mans the 20mm cannons. But it’s too late; the B-29 takes a series of devastating hits and begins to fall out of the sky. The pilots must bail out to save themselves!
Separated from Reed on the descent to earth, Connor finds himself alone... almost. He watches in horror as the UFO destroys the downed wreckage. He slips away over a nearby hill as the UFO attempts to track him.
The two comrades are soon reunited, but in unfavorable conditions. They’ve spied a strange factory, where unearthly creatures are amassing an army of robots and loading them onto a waiting spacecraft.
Untrackable and without aid from the missile command, the pilots are vulnerable and soon spotted by the hostile creatures! The chase is on as the two are pursued by attack robots; they make a daring escape on a motorbike stolen from the UFO factory scrap yard. As the robots close in, the pilots are forced directly into another time warp to their final destination: The Lost Highway Arcade in the year 2020.
I have also created an alternate ending to this story (it is included on the audio CD), which is a prequel to Episode II (currently in the works). It will leave you hanging....
